Stealth overtakes Swarm's early lead

SAINT PAUL, Minn. –The Minnesota Swarm (8-9) fell to the Washington Stealth (9-8) by a score of 14-8 in front of 5,878 fans during the first round of the playoffs on Treasure Island Field at Xcel Energy Center.

"We didn't show up in the second half," coach Mike Lines said. "We put in a solid effort in the first half and we played well. We played these guys four times this year and what we got was what we expected.

"Washington stepped it up in the second half and did all of the little things that we didn't do."

After an early 5-1 Minnesota lead, the defending champion Washington Stealth came back to close the gap. Holding Minnesota scoreless in the fourth quarter, the Stealth’s offense tallied a total of five unanswered goals.

In the third quarter, F Callum Crawford (2g, 1a) registered a goal at the 12:17 mark to give the Swarm a 7-6 lead. F Kevin Ross (2g, 1a) recorded what was to be the last Swarm goal of the game with 3:05 remaining. At the end of the quarter, Minnesota trailed Washington 10-8.

Forward Kevin Ross scored the lone goal of the second quarter at the 9:08 mark to put the Swarm up 6-3. The Stealth strung together three goals, two of which came with under 1:20 remaining, chipping away at Minnesota’s lead and bringing the score to a 6-6 tie at halftime.

In the first quarter, T Rich Morgan (1g) netted the first goal of the game at the 13:10 mark to put the Swarm off to an early lead. Forwards Callum Crawford, F Aaron Wilson (1g, 2a) and Jamie Shewchuk (1g, 1a) each posted a goal to bring the score to 4-1 in Minnesota’s favor. In his first playoff appearance, rookie transition player T Andrew Suitor (1g) notched a goal to bring Minnesota’s lead to 5-1. At the end of the quarter, the Swarm led the Stealth 5-3.

Forwards Rhys Duch (3g, 4a) and Lewis Ratcliff (3g, 3a) led Washington with a hat trick a piece. Goalie Tyler Richards made 40 saves on 48 shots in 59 minutes of play.
