SAINT PAUL, Minn. – The National Lacrosse League’s (NLL) Minnesota Swarm players D Rory Smith and D Ryan Cousins were selected by Team Canada to compete in the 2011 Federation of International Lacrosse’s (FIL) World Indoor Lacrosse Championships (WILC). Team England also selected Minnesota Swarm rookie T Andrew Suitor and named T Rich Morgan to the reserves. The WILC will take place in Prague, Czech Republic from May 21-28.
Smith, 25, a 6-foot, 198-pound Brampton, Ontario native, is known as one of the league’s toughest and most fearless defenders. He was acquired fourth overall in the first round of the 2010 Orlando Titans Dispersal Draft by Minnesota.
The defenseman has collected 27 loose balls and 37 PIM for the Swarm in eight game appearances. In 47 career games, Smith has recorded 3 points (3a), 121 loose balls and 231 PIM for New York, Orlando and Minnesota.
Cousins, 29, is a nine-year veteran of the NLL and has played for the Swarm for the past six seasons. The Swarm captain, and two-time NLL “Defender of the Year,” has made 121 career appearances for Columbus, Arizona and Minnesota and tallied 73 points (31g, 42a), 547 loose balls and 208 PIM.
Suitor, 21, a first year member of the NLL has recorded three points (3a), 50 loose balls and 32 PIM in seven appearances for the Swarm. He was acquired by Minnesota fourth overall in the first round of the 2010 NLL Entry Draft.
Morgan, 31, is in his second year with Minnesota. This season, the 6-foot-8-inch, 260-pound transition player has tallied nine points (4g, 5a) and 17 loose balls in seven game appearances. In eight years and 114 games played in the NLL, the Port Coquitlam, British Columbia native has registered 143 points (75g, 68a) and 460 loose balls.
