100% of Electricity Offset for Feb. 19 Contest Against Boston

SAINT PAUL, Minn. –The National Lacrosse League’s (NLL) Minnesota Swarm today announced a partnership with Xcel Energy Center to purchase wind energy through Xcel Energy’s Windsource® program for the Swarm’s Saturday, Feb. 19 contest against the Boston Blazers on Treasure Island Field at 7:30 p.m. CST.

Through the partnership, the Swarm has purchased enough renewable energy to offset 100% of the electricity required for the game. Minnesota is the first NLL team to participate in a voluntary green power program.

Along with the partnership with Windsource from Xcel Energy, the Swarm will also be releasing a “Green Ticket” for Go Green at the Hive night on Feb. 19. Proceeds will assist the Swarm’s efforts to purchase wind energy for its remaining 2011 home games through the Windsource program. By using renewable energy for a 24-hour period on five game days, the Swarm would help avoid 60,000 lbs of CO2 emissions, the equivalent of taking five cars off of the road for a year.

The National Hockey League’s (NHL) Minnesota Wild will also participate in the Windsource program as part of “Windsource Weekend” at Xcel Energy Center during its contest against the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday, Feb. 20. The new program will be offered to other events at Xcel Energy Center and the Saint Paul RiverCentre in an effort to fulfill its mission of becoming a regional leader in sustainability.

"We want to do our part to help our partners at Xcel Energy Center achieve their goal of reducing the annual facility wide carbon footprint,” said Minnesota Swarm Co-Owner and Vice President Andy Arlotta. “We encourage other events and programs to do the same locally as well as nationally in the NLL."

About Windsource
• Windsource is a voluntary renewable energy program, which allows customers to purchase renewable energy from Xcel Energy.

• The energy for Windsource comes from 20 Minnesota wind farms whose output is dedicated to our voluntary customers. This energy cannot be used by Xcel Energy to meet its other renewable energy mandates, meaning that Windsource helps increase the amount of renewable energy on the grid in Minnesota.

• Over 20,000 homes and 250 businesses in Minnesota purchase renewable energy through Windsource, making it one of the largest programs in the country.

Tickets for the 2011 Minnesota Swarm season, presented by Treasure Island Resort & Casino, are available by visiting mnswarm.com or calling 888-MN-SWARM.
