SAINT PAUL, MINN - The Minnesota Swarm selected D Rory Smith with the fourth overall selection in Friday’s dispersal draft of the Orlando Titans.
Smith, 23, recorded one point (1a), collected 35 loose balls and tallied a team-high 104 PIM in 14 games with the Titans last season. The native of Brampton, Ontario has been known as one of the league’s most fearless defenders during his three years in the NLL with the Titans.
“Rory brings a tremendous amount of toughness to our roster,” said Swarm Owner John Arlotta. “He is an outstanding defensive player and he will have an immediate impact on our team in 2011. We were looking to upgrade our defense in the offseason, and to get a player of his caliber along with his toughness was a real bonus for us.”
In his three-year career, Smith has appeared in 39 games and has tallied two points (2a), 94 loose balls and 194 PIM. The Titans selected the 6-foot, 198-pound defenseman in the 2007 NLL Entry Draft with the 17th overall pick in the second round.
Smith is currently a member of the New Westminster Salmonbellies of the Western Lacrosse Association (WLA) this summer and has appeared in 13 games for the team.
Prior to his time in the NLL, Smith spent the 2007 season with the Brampton Excelsiors of the Ontario Junior “A” Lacrosse League. He was named the Most Valuable Defensive Player in the Ontario Junior “B” Lacrosse League in 2006. Smith also attended York University in Canada and was a former professional hockey player before playing lacrosse.
The Swarm also acquired D Tim O’Brien in the second round (14th overall), and D Matt Bocklet in the third round (24th overall).
O’Brien, 33, posted two points (1g, 1a), four PIM and one loose ball in two games with the Titans last season. In his six seasons in the NLL with Rochester, New York, Albany, Toronto, and Orlando, the native of Edmonton, Alberta has recorded three points (1g, 2a), 28 loose balls, and 110 PIM in 31 games.
Bocklet, 24, has recorded three points (1g, 2a), 29 loose balls and two PIM in six career games in the NLL with the Philadelphia Wings. The product from Johns Hopkins University is currently playing in the Major League Lacrosse (MLL) with the Denver Outlaws.
