SAINT PAUL, Minn. – The National Lacrosse League today announced that Minnesota Swarm transition players Jordan MacIntosh (Transition) and Kiel Matisz (Rookie) have earned NLL Week #8 Player Awards. Both MacIntosh and Matisz were rewarded for their strong play in the Swarm’s two games against the Edmonton Rush this past weekend where Minnesota finished 1-1.
This is the second week in a row that Matisz has earned Rookie of the Week honors. The Robert Morris University product leads all first-year players with three Rookie of the Week awards in 2013. Wednesday’s award marked the third time in MacIntosh’s career that he has been named Transition Player of the Week, and was his first award this season.
MacIntosh, 23, totaled seven points (3g, 4a) and collected a team-high 26 loose balls over the weekend. In Friday’s 13-8 road win, MacIntosh tied career-highs in points (6) and goals (3) and added eight loose balls while going 12-for-24 (50%) on faceoffs. On Sunday, MacIntosh tied a personal-best 18 loose balls and went 16-for-26 (62%) on faceoffs in Minnesota’s 14-9 loss. The Oakville, Ontario native currently ranks third in the NLL in both loose balls (86) and faceoff wins (114).
“I’m happy to see Jordan receive the accolades that he deserves,” Swarm head coach Joe Sullivan said. “His transition game is what he is known for and his faceoffs have come around this season, and he is outworking his opponents on the loose balls. Jordan is a more well-rounded player in 2013 versus where he was last year. It’s good to see that his hard has paid off.”
Matisz, 23, continued his strong rookie campaign in two games against Edmonton, finishing with eight points (4g, 4a) and 13 loose balls. In his first career appearance against the Rush at Rexall Place, Matisz posted a hat trick – his third of the season – and added seven loose balls. At home on Sunday, Matisz recorded five points (1g, 4a) and scooped up six loose balls. The No. 3 overall pick in the 2012 NLL Entry Draft ranks second on the Swarm in goals with 15 and is tied for the team lead with five power play tallies.
“It’s great to see Kiel continue to have success this season, and he’s shown a lot of consistency for such a young player,” Sullivan said. “To have this kind of an impact on the league, as tough and competitive as it is, speaks volume to his character and willingness to get better. This is his third Rookie of the Week award, and I don’t think it will be his last one this season.”
Minnesota (3-5) will be looking for its second win of the season against the West Division leading Washington Stealth (5-4) this Sunday when the two teams faceoff at the Comcast Arena at Everett. Faceoff is set for 5 p.m. CT.
