Denver, Colorado -- In a game that marked the first meeting between the National Lacrosse League’s (NLL) Minnesota Swarm (1-3) and Colorado Mammoth (2-2) since the 2012 playoffs, there were several other firsts on the night as Minnesota fell 15-9.
Second year forward Jay Card scored his first goal of the season to kick off the game. Rookie Matt Gibson made his NLL debut and scored the first goal of his career in the third quarter.
Several other Swarm rookies made their presence known during the game, highlighted by Shayne Jackson’s five points (1g, 4a) to lead the team. Reigning NLL Rookie of the Week Kiel Matisz had one goal and two assists, while T Brock Sorensen had two assists to go along with solid defense.
Regular Swarm fixtures contributed on the night as well. Ryan Benesch had three points (1g, 2a) and Captain Andrew Suitor charged into the net to begin the second half for his lone goal of the night.
Jordan MacIntosh filled up the stat sheet Saturday night with three points (2g, 1a), 10 loose balls and 13 faceoff wins as both Evan Kirk and Tyler Carlson played in front of the net for Minnesota.
Swarm forward Callum Crawford missed the game with a hamstring injury.
Reigning NLL Most Valuable Player John Grant Jr. was huge for Colorado, scoring 11 points (5g, 6a) on the night.
The Swarm’s next game is Friday February 8 at Xcel Energy Center against the Toronto Rock. Minnesota will be celebrating Heroes Night at the Hive as it honors local military members, veterans, police officers, firefighters and nurses throughout the night.
