Q&A with SPT Co-Captain, Ginger!

Ginger is a three-year veteran and co-captain of the Swarm Performance Team (SPT). She graduated from Minnesota State University-Mankato with a degree in exercise physiology and a minor in dance. She currently works on the Procter & Gamble account at a local corporation and is pursuing her M.B.A. at the University of St. Thomas.

Ginger has a yorkie named Priscilla & a beta fish named Lucky. She has a passion for fitness and is addicted to Core Power Yoga’s yoga sculpt classes. In her free time, when she’s not studying, she likes to work out, watch movies, read James Patterson novels and shop.

Jessica Baltes from the Minnesota Swarm recently caught up with Ginger.

Jessica: Congratulations on once again being selected as the co-captain of the SPT! How is your third season with the SPT going so far?

Ginger: This third season with the Swarm has been great! Having so many veterans on the team makes game days and practice so easy and enjoyable! Everyone comes to practice prepared and is coming in to their own at the games. My teammates are comfortable interacting with the fans more now that they have a season under their belt and are all true leaders of this team. I love being co-captains with Jes again. She and I have become so close and she is wonderful to work with.

Jessica: How did you first find out about the Swarm Performance Team? What led you to try out and what keeps you coming back?

Ginger: A few ladies I danced with on Timberwolves actually auditioned and made the Swarm and couldn’t say enough great things about the team and the dancers. I wasn’t ready to sunset my professional dancing career just yet after three years with the Timberwolves, so I decided to audition and keep coming back because the ladies I get to dance with are so amazing, I get to learn great choreography and perform in front of thousands of fans, and the time commitment is less than half the time I was spending with the Wolves organization so it makes working full time and dancing manageable.

Jessica: What are game days like for the SPT?

Ginger: Game days are like a whirlwind! From the minute we walk into the locker room, we are busy reviewing material, prepping for appearances throughout the game, promoting our calendars to the fans, mingling with fans, and of course performing! I just wish there were more than eight home games because it just goes by too fast!

Jessica: In your three years with the Swarm, have you had a favorite appearance?

Ginger: My favorite appearance was probably the Holiday Bowl this year. There were so many fans that came out for this appearance and it was in the beginning of the season so everyone was hyped up for home opener. We had our calendars done by that time also so it was fun to have an autograph signing session as a team and show our fans our fabulous calendar!

Jessica: You are one of the cover girls for the SPT calendar this year. Is it exciting to be a part of a photo shoot?

Ginger: The photo shoots are always so much fun! We get to spend an evening all together looking fabulous and posing for a camera. Who wouldn’t love that? We were really impressed with the calendar this year and love how it turned out.

Jessica: Obviously, dancing in itself is a great form of exercise. What other types of exercise do you and the ladies on the SPT do to stay in such great shape?

Ginger: We are sponsored by Core Power Yoga so we obviously take advantage of that. I personally am in love with their Yoga Sculpt classes and do those four days a week. I also like the Hot Power Fusion classes as well. Outside of that, we all do cardio on our own to keep in shape for the season. It’s been great to be able to run outside with this great weather we’ve been having!

Jessica: You began taking dance classes when you were only three years old. What inspired you to start? Were any of your family members or friends into dance?

Ginger: My mom started me in dance classes when I was three years old in Germany. None of my family members were dancers, but my mom wanted to start me in something that could be consistent with how much we travelled as an Army family. I was drawn to it immediately and have stuck with it ever since!

Jessica: The Swarm heads to Washington this Sunday (3/25) to take on Washington and will return home to battle Calgary on Friday (3/30). Is the SPT prepared and ready to go?

Ginger: We are definitely ready to go! We’ve got two new dances to show our fans, one of which Jes and I choreographed. We’ve had a little time off but now we are anxious for the second half of the season to get rolling. The Swarm has a great record and we are looking forward to some playoff games!!

Go Swarm!
