SAINT PAUL, Minn. – The National Lacrosse League (NLL) today announced that Minnesota Swarm G Evan Kirk has been named the Rookie of the Month for February. Kirk, 24, finished February with a 2-0 record after recording wins in his first two starts in the NLL and posted a team best 6.50 GAA and .873 SV%.
“This award shows that hard work really does pay off,” head coach Joe Sullivan said. “In most scenarios across the league, rookie goalies don’t get as many starts as we perceive Evan having. Personally, this is great for Evan, but I’m sure he would probably tell everybody as well that this is great for the team's defense. He’s the first one to point out how well our defense has played in front of him during both of his wins in February.”
Earlier this week, Kirk received his second Rookie of the Week award this season after stopping 43 of 50 shots in his first career start on the road in the Swarm’s 15-7 win in Washington on Feb 24. Kirk also earned Rookie of the Week honors back in Week #6 after registering a complete game in the Swarm’s 9-6 victory at home against the Rochester Knighthawks on Feb. 12. That afternoon, Kirk made 46 saves on 52 shots (.885 SV%) in his professional debut.
“There’s a lot of good rookies in this league,” Kirk said. “I’m honored to receive this award.
“I give credit to everyone on defense for all of the help this season. They have been making big plays, getting tons of loose balls and that has helped me feel a lot more comfortable to make those saves.”
Minnesota selected the Hobart College graduate in the first round (sixth-overall) of the 2011 NLL Entry Draft. In 2012, Kirk has posted the lowest goals against average (6.50) and highest save percentage (.873) of any Swarm rookie goalie in team history during his first two starts.
Minnesota (4-3) once again travels west this weekend, this time to take on the Calgary Roughnecks (5-2) for a West Division showdown on Saturday, March 3 at 8 p.m. CT. Fans can watch the game online via the NLL Network on NLL.com.
