SAINT PAUL, Minn. –The National Lacrosse League’s (NLL) Minnesota Swarm today announced that it will partner with Xcel Energy Center for the second consecutive season to purchase wind energy through Xcel Energy’s Windsource® program for the Swarm’s Saturday, Feb. 18 contest against the Colorado Mammoth on Treasure Island Field at 7 p.m. CT.
The Swarm first partnered with Xcel Energy’s Windsource® program with “Windsource Weekend” during the 2011 season. Xcel Energy Center’s electricity needs were offset for 48 consecutive hours when the Swarm purchased wind energy last season for its Feb. 19th contest in 2011.
“We are excited to partner with Xcel Energy Center once again this season,” said Minnesota Swarm Co-Owner and Vice President Andy Arlotta. “It’s important to us to continue with this initiative and to help create a cleaner environment. We hope that our participation encourages other events at Xcel Energy Center to take advantage of the Windsource® program.”
This year, the Swarm will offset 100% of the electricity needs for its doubleheader with the Minnesota RollerGirls on Saturday, Feb. 18 at Xcel Energy Center by purchasing renewable energy.
Through a partnership with Xcel Energy Center, event organizers purchase wind energy through Xcel Energy’s Windsource® program. The subscription helps drive demand for wind energy while helping Xcel Energy Center work toward its goal to reduce its carbon footprint. Arena officials rely on historical energy usage data to estimate the subscription amount required to offset the event. Xcel Energy then tracks actual energy usage data to determine the final cost, which typically would only vary slightly.
The Windsource® by Events Program is also available for neighboring facilities Saint Paul RiverCentre and The Legendary Roy Wilkins Auditorium.
• Windsource is a voluntary renewable energy program, which allows customers to purchase renewable energy from Xcel Energy.
• The energy for Windsource comes from 20 Minnesota wind farms whose output is dedicated to voluntary customers. This energy cannot be used by Xcel Energy to meet its other renewable energy mandates, meaning that Windsource helps increase the amount of renewable energy on the grid in Minnesota.
• Over 20,000 homes and 250 businesses in Minnesota purchase renewable energy through Windsource, making it one of the largest programs in the country.
