Tryouts to be held on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 5:30 p.m.

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – The National Lacrosse League’s (NLL) Minnesota Swarm will hold auditions for the 2012 Swarm Performance Team (SPT) at Highland Park CorePower Yoga on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 5:30 p.m. Ten ladies will be selected for the performance team and will join head coach Tami Krause and assistant coach Allison Drusch.

Registration begins at 5:30 p.m. and auditions will run until the final team is announced.  Walk-in registration is available at a cost of $25. Form fitting dance attire and proper shoes are required. Attendees should bring a performance resume, non-returnable photograph, water bottle and a snack.

Registrants must be 21 years of age at the time of open auditions as well as be one of the following: a full-time college student, a full-time employee or a full-time mom. A high school diploma or a G.E.D. is also required to be a SPT member.

“We are very excited about the upcoming season and selecting a new Swarm Performance Team,” Krause said. “We know that we are going to see some familiar faces joining us back and we are excited about the fresh faces that will be joining our team.”

Krause enters her eighth season as head coach and coordinator for the SPT in 2012. For the past 14 years, she has also held the same role for the Minnesota Vikings cheerleading squad. A mother of three boys and a girl, Krause was a dance major at the University of Minnesota and is a former professional cheerleader.

Drusch will enter her third season as an assistant coach after previously spending three years as a member of the SPT and guest choreographer. A mother of two girls, Drusch is a former Vikings cheerleading captain and pro bowl cheerleader. She is also the co-owner of LifeCore Yoga in North Oaks, Minn.

Why try out for the SPT?
• Dance at an award-winning venue in Xcel Energy Center
• Dance in front of a die-hard and dedicated fan base. The Swarm has averaged over 10,000 fans during its home contests in seven seasons
• Involvement in team appearances as well as community and sponsor events
• SPT member benefits include training at CorePower Yoga, warm-up gear, Swarm attire and Swarm season tickets. Tanning, make-up and spa services are also included.

Tips from Coach Tami Krause

What type of skills and characteristics are valued?
We will be looking to see if you have danced at a professional level or have the potential to reach that level with training during the season. Specific areas of skill include flexibility, turns, leaps and the ability to pick and retain choreography. In terms of character, we are looking for women with outgoing personalities who understand professionalism. As a key part of Swarm marketing, you are a face of the team. You have to be excited on the floor and when engaging with fans.

What benefits are available to SPT members?
The team receives excellent sponsorship benefits. This year we will be training with CorePower Yoga. Members also get great warm-up gear and Swarm attire. Free tanning, make-up and spa services are also included. On top of that, you also get season tickets.

What kind of turnout is expected at tryouts?
The awareness of lacrosse and the Swarm builds every year in the Twin Cities community. With the team entering its eighth season, the talent pool and number of applicants will continue to grow. Last year over 40 girls were involved, this year we expect that number to double.

What responsibilities are included as a member of the SPT?
Weekly practices begin the Monday after tryouts. You are also expected to train on your own while keeping up a healthy workout routine. In addition to dancing twice at every home game and welcoming the players to the field, the team also participates in promotions around the arena and post-game parties. SPT members are also involved in team appearances in the community and with sponsor events.

How many hours are spent preparing each week?
SPT is like a part time job. Preparation usually entails ten hours per week. Practices will be held on Monday evenings from approximately 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. On game weeks, you will probably put in a considerable amount more. Advanced notice will be given for additional rehearsals associated with halftime shows, etc. Appearances can be on any day of the week and are filled based on availability.
