![]() ![]() Meet Zack Greer Alec Schimke | mnswarm.com I recently had the privilege of speaking with one of the newest members of the Swarm, rookie forward Zack Greer who was selected third overall in the 2009 NLL Entry Draft. Greer gives us his perspective on draft day, transition to the indoor game and expectations in 2010. Schimke: What was running through your head on draft day? Greer: It was crazy. I heard a lot of rumors about where I was going to end up, but you never really know with all the trades going on. I was excited when that third pick came out and I went to Minnesota. To go third overall in such a deep draft is an honor. To come to a great organization where I know they have great fans is great. Minnesota is a place I’m really excited to get to know and I can’t wait to get out there to play lacrosse. Schimke: Have you ever been to Minnesota?Greer: Nope, I have never been there. I’ve heard nothing but good things though. Schimke: What do you expect in the transition from outdoor to indoor? Greer: I haven’t played box in a couple of years, but I grew up playing indoor so I should be alright. It's going to take time to adjust to a smaller goal, but getting back out on the field will help me get in the swing of things for sure. Schimke: What is the biggest difference between outdoor and indoor? Greer: There is definitely a lot less space in the indoor game. You have to be quicker on your feet. You also get knocked around a lot more so you have to make decisions a lot faster than the outdoor game. Obviously, shooting on a smaller goal with a bigger goalie makes a big difference so you have to be a lot more accurate with your shots too. Schimke: What did it take to become one of the top collegiate players in the country? Greer: A lot of work. There are a lot of different aspects that come into play. You need to have great coaching and great teammates. That is something that I’ve had my whole career and something I’m very thankful for. You just have to work hard day in and day out. You really can’t take a day off if you want to excel. Schimke: What are your expectations for 2010? Greer: It's hard to set expectations right now. You don’t want to set goals too high or too low in your first year. I really don’t know what to expect. I’m looking forward to getting to know the team and finding a spot where I can fit in. There are a lot of great players in Minnesota and I just need to find my role and get comfortable. ![]() Schimke: The Swarm have a talented left-side in forwards Ryan Benesch and Kevin Buchanan. How excited are you to play with these guys? Greer: It’s going to be really exciting. I’ve played against both of those guys growing up and they are unbelievable players. It’s going to be a lot of fun to work with them and with the guys on the right side as well. We have a lot of talent on offense so it will be fun to get out there and see how we mesh together. Schimke: What do you do in your free time? Greer: I’m an outdoors type of guy. I like fishing, going out on the boat and riding my dirt bike. I spend a lot of time up north at a cottage when I’m away from the field. Schimke: We have a lot of lakes in Minnesota. Do you plan on going fishing up here? Greer: I was talking to my old coach Mike Pressler and he told me there is a lot of great walleye fishing in Minnesota, so it's something I will be checking out for sure. Schimke: Minnesota has pretty intense winters. How will you handle the cold weather? Greer: It should be fine. It’s a bit further north than what I’m used to, but my cottage is in Northern Ontario where it gets really cold in the winter. I grew up in some really cold weather so it’s going to take a little while to adjust, but hopefully I'll be able to manage.
