Tryouts
Saint Paul, MN – The Swarm have announced that tryouts for the Swarm Performance Team (SPT) will take place at CorePower Yoga in Minneapolis on Saturday, Oct 24. Ten women will be selected to the team and join Head Coach Tami Krause and new coach Allison Drusch for the 2010 season. Registration begins at 6:00 PM.

Krause enters her sixth season as Head Coach and Coordinator for the Minnesota Swarm Performance Team. For the past 12 years, she has also held that same role for Minnesota Vikings Cheerleading. A mother of three boys, Krause was a dance major from the University of Minnesota and is a former professional cheerleader.

Joining Krause on the coaching staff is first year coach, Allison Drusch, who brings her prior experience as a three-year member of the SPT and guest choreographer.

“We have so many new and exciting things going on with the Swarm this year and bringing Allison on board is another addition to the list,” stated Krause. “I can’t wait to see which 10 amazing women will gear up for the 2010 team.”

A mother of two girls, Drusch is also a former Vikings Cheerleading Captain and Pro Bowl Cheerleader. She also serves as a UPA Judges Coordinator for National Dance and Cheer Competitions.

“I’m looking forward to coming back to the Swarm in this new role. I loved every year of dancing with the SPT and am honored for the opportunity to share my passion and expertise as a coach,” explained Drusch.

Tips From Coach Tami

With the Swarm Performance Team tryouts just around the corner, Coach Tami Krause has some suggestions for 2010 SPT hopefuls.

What type of skills and characteristics are valued?
We will be looking to see if you have danced at a professional level or have the potential to reach that level with training during the season. Specific areas of skill include flexibility, turns, leaps and the ability to pick and retain choreography. In terms of character, we are looking for women with a outgoing personality that understand professionalism. As a key part of Swarm marketing, you are a face of the team. You have to be excited on the floor and when engaging with fans.

Why try out for the SPT?
If you love to dance...
  • We offer an award-winning venue in the Xcel Energy Center.
  • The Swarm is a great organization to work with.
  • The fans are amazing and committed. It's a diverse group that enjoys the game and the atmosphere.
To be a part of a group of women that all have the same goals and enjoy dance at professional level is very special.

What benefits are available to SPT members?
The team receives excellent sponsorship benefits. This year we will be training with CorePower Yoga. Members also get great warm-up gear and Swarm attire. Free tanning, make-up and spa services are also included. On top of that, you also get season tickets.

What kind of turnout is expected at tryouts?
The awareness of lacrosse and the Swarm builds every year in the Twin Cities community. With team entering it's sixth season, the talent pool and number of applicants will continue to grow. Last year over 40 girls were involved, this year we expect even more.

What responsibilities are included as a member of the SPT?
Weekly practices begin at the end of October after tryouts. You are also expected to train on your own while keeping up a healthy workout routine. In addition to dancing twice at every home game and welcoming the players to the field, the team also participates in promotions around the arena and post-game parties. SPT members are also involved in team appearances in the community and with sponsor events.

How many hours are spent preparing each week?
SPT is like a part time job. Preparation usually entails ten hours a week. On game weeks, you will probably put in a considerable amount more.

Summer Preparation
Two year member Jes shares her pre-audition preparations:

In the summer I teach several dance camps, boot camps and workshops that keep me in shape.  I continually strive to improve my skills, technique and knowledge of dance. To increase my flexibility and prevent injury, I make power yoga a big part of my life. It’s a great way to strengthen and center both my mind and body.  I also have a gym membership where I enjoy various classes from step aerobics to body contouring as well as lots of weight training. I like to vary my workout so I’ll mix in hiking, biking and running.  Many SPT members meet up in the offseason to run together, workout and attend different dance classes. It’s important to us to be in great shape, live a healthy lifestyle and be ready for the best fans in Minnesota. Go Swarm!
