MINNESOTA TAKES A SECOND VICTORY OVER NEW YORK, 17-14

Saint Paul, M.N. - The Minnesota Swarm shot out of the gates running and gunning and later fought off a late comeback to win 17-14 over the New York Titans before 9,056 fans at Xcel Energy Center in NLL action Sunday. Minnesota set a record for most goals in a quarter at home with seven in the first. The second half was all New York as the Titans outscored the Swarm 10-2 but still fell short. With back-to-back wins over the Titans, Minnesota improves to 4-3 and knocks New York to a sorry 1-7 on the season.

Mike Hominuck notched six points last night at New York and led the team with another six tonight, tallying two goals and four assists. Kasey Beirnes, Ryan Ward, and Dean Hill each contributed five points each for Minnesota. Swarm goalie Matt Disher earned his first decision of the year by blocking 37 of 51 shots in the victory. While New York swapped goalies three times Matt Vinc recorded the loss with eight goals allowed on 34 shots in 45:23 of playing time. The Titans’ Ryan Boyle (2 goals, 6 assists) and Pat Maddalena (5 goals, 3 assists) led the team in points.     The Swarm controlled the first quarter by scoring the first seven goals and only allowing one late-quarter Titan goal. Each of Minnesota’s goals were scored at even strength and by a different player. Ryan Cousins, Dean Hill and Mike Hominuck tallied a goal and a helper each. New York’s Maddalena rattled the twine with only 17 seconds left to prevent a first quarter shutout.

Minnesota kept up the pace tallying six goals in the second quarter while allowing only three from New York. The Swarm’s Mike Hominuck provided five first half points with two goals and three assists to lead the team while Beirnes completed a hat trick in the second. Maddalena led the Titans with two of their four goals before heading to halftime trailing the Swarm 13-4.

The Titans mounted a comeback in the third quarter outscoring Minnesota 5-2. Maddalena kept the Titan’s spirits high by scoring three of the teams five third period goals and assisting on the other two. New York’s surge put the Titans within six with one quarter to play.

Minnesota quickly jumped on the fresh quarter tallying a goal 31 seconds into the fourth. New York put the pressure back on Minnesota scoring four unanswered goals starting at 4:51, which brought the Titans within three with just under four minutes to play. Casey Powell continued the late New York charge with three of his four goals coming in the fourth but Minnesota’s lead was too great to overcome.

Minnesota heads to Chicago next Saturday, February 24 to face the Shamrox for an 8:30 showdown at the Sears Centre. Chicago won the first contest in the Swarms season opener 11-10 at Xcel Energy Center.
