St. Paul, MN - The Minnesota Swarm fell to the Anaheim Storm on Friday night, 8-7 before a crowd of 12,514 at the Xcel Energy Center. Six players netted goals for Minnesota, including Kerry Susheski who scored twice. Chad Culp scored a goal and added three assists and Sean Pollock netted a goal and two assists in the loss. Matt Disher made 40 saves for the Swarm, which dropped to 2-3 overall and 0-2 at the Xcel Energy Center.
Anaheim was led in scoring by Shawn Cable who recorded one goal and three assists. Peter Morgan and Scott Stewart each recorded a pair of goals. Netminder Matt King earned the win stopping 30 of 32 shots faced.
The Swarm opened the contest by scoring the first five goals of the game and led 5-1 after the first quarter. Culp opened the scoring with a goal 2:39 into the contest. The Swarm then took advantage of three straight Anaheim penalties by converting all three of its power play chances as Kerry Susheski, Sean Pollock and Jon Sullivan tallied man advantage goals. Neil Doddridge upped Minnesota's lead to 5-0 on a rebound goal off of a Riley Kemp shot at the 13:56 mark. Anaheim finally got on the scoreboard thanks to a Casey Powell power play goal with 23 seconds remaining in the quarter.
Anaheim continued its momentum from the end of the first quarter and scored the next four goals of the contest to tie the game, 5-5 at the 5:55 mark of the second quarter. As was the case for the Swarm in the first quarter, the Storm capitalized on Minnesota penalties as Morgan and Raweras Mitchell sandwiched power play goals in between a pair of Scott Stewart even strength goals to knot the score at five. Anaheim outshot Minnesota 16-7 and held the Swarm scoreless in the second quarter. King, who replaced starter Matt Roik at the 13:56 mark of the first quarter, stopped all eight shots he faced in the first half for the Storm.
The Storm took the lead, 6-5, on an unassisted, shorthanded tally from Cable at the 11:29 mark of the third quarter. Ryder Bateman's power play goal with 2:58 remaining in the quarter snapped the Swarm's scoreless streak at 28:06 and left the game tied, 6-6, heading into the final quarter.
Anaheim regained the lead on a B.J. Potter goal with 9:45 remaining in the game and Peter Morgan upped the Storm's lead to 8-6 with 5:52 left in the contest. Susheski scored his second goal of the game with seven seconds remaining in the contest as the Swarm pulled Disher for an extra attacker, but it would get no closer as Anaheim held off Minnesota in the game's closing seconds.
The Storm outshot the Swarm 48-41 in the game. Anaheim finished 3-for-6 on the power play, Minnesota went 4-for-6.
The Swarm gets next weekend off and returns to action on Friday, February 11 when it hosts the Toronto Rock at Xcel Energy Center at 7:00 PM.
