Minnesota Swarm Fall In OT At Arizona Sting, 17-16

Glendale, AZ - Jonas Derks goal 3:26 into overtime gave the Arizona Sting a 17-16 victory over the Minnesota Swarm in front of 6,448 fans at Glendale Arena. Arizona upped its record to 4-4 while Minnesota dropped to 2-5. The Swarm hosts the Philadelphia Wings on Sunday at Xcel Energy Center at 2:00 PM.
Kelly Hall scored four goals, Ryan Ward recorded three goals and one assist, Kerry Susheski tallied three goals and Chad Culp notched two goals and two assists to lead Minnesota in scoring. Matt Disher made 36 saves in a losing effort for the Swarm.
Jonas Derks led Arizona with five goals and three assists, Dan Dawson added six goals and one assist and Pat Maddalena contributed three goals and three assists in a winning effort for the Sting. Ken Montour made 25 saves in relief of starter Mike Miron to earn the win.
Arizona opened up the scoring with goals from Dawson and Maddalena to take a 2-0 lead 4:46 into the game. Minnesota responded with goals from Hall, Culp and Sean Pollock to take a 3-2 lead at the 9:09 mark of the first quarter. Hall gave the Swarm a 4-3 lead on a power play tally with 3:10 remaining, but the quarter ended in a 4-4 tie on a goal from Derks at the 12:38 mark.
Minnesota raced out to a 7-4 lead at the start of the second quarter as the club sandwiched shorthanded goals by Ward and Culp around an even strength tally from Susheski. The Sting changed goalies following Culp's goal and regained momentum taking advantage of a five-minute high-sticking major penalty against Jon Sullivan by scoring three consecutive power play goals to notch the game, 7-7, with 6:20 remaining in the half. Ward's second goal of the game put the Swarm back in the lead before a Dawson power play goal tied the game, 8-8, at halftime.
Special teams led the way in the third quarter as the first five goals scored in the period came with one team playing shorthanded. The Sting struck first with a shorthanded goal from Peter Lough 1:31 into the third quarter. The Swarm responded with power play goals from Craig Conn and Susheski and a shorthanded marker from Andrew Martin to take an 11-9 lead with 3:40 remaining in the quarter. Minnesota took a 12-11 into the fourth quarter as Susheski tallied his third goal of the game between Arizona goals from Dawson and Jason Clark.
The Swarm upped its lead to 13-11 on a power play goal from Hall, his third of the game, at the 2:14 mark. The Sting struck back with the game's next four goals, including two more from Dawson, to take a 15-13 lead with 8:01 remaining in the game. Minnesota tied the game at 15 on power play goals from Hall and Ward with 5:33 remaining on the clock. Arizona reclaimed the lead on a Cory Bomberry goal and then the Swarm's D'Arcy Berthiaume scored an unassisted goal with 1:26 remaining to make the score 16-16 and force overtime.
Berthiaume and Conn returned to the lineup after missing the last three games due to injury. The club was without rookie defenseman Scott Campell who missed his second game with a hand injury.
